Afraid of Goodbyes

she was afraid of goodbyes
until the ache in her heart told her why
and she realized how much she cried
over memories too precious to forget.

she was afraid of goodbyes
until she realized how priceless a whisper
of farewell across the tongue truly is
even if it’s through tears.

she was afraid of goodbyes
until she learned how to cherish, yet
let go of the past and
hold onto hope of the future.

she was afraid of goodbyes
until she learned how to hope and pray
that someday familiar red strings would cross
and   maybe    she    would    see    them    a g a i n .
